Work to build Newport’s £22 million eco-friendly station continues to gather pace ahead of next year’s Ryder Cup which is taking place at nearby Celtic Manor.
Using a 500-tonne crane with a reach of 40 metres, 33 tonnes of concrete and steel have been lifted into position during a seven hour window. Standing five metres high, the two concrete rings and a steel ring beam form the central support column for a new footbridge.
Since work started, engineers have been working round-the-clock to complete vital ground works including piling, excavations and the construction of concrete foundations. As well as completing the bridge, the next couple of months will see a new road junction laid to the south side of the site and foundations installed for the station buildings.
The project is jointly funded by Network Rail and the Welsh Assembly Government and is the biggest and greenest station project to be carried out in South Wales.
